Chris Brown is getting the club banging with "Turn Up the Music." The first single from Brown's upcoming album, Fortune, was released Thursday (January 26), and much like his 2010 hit "Yeah 3x," Brown revisits an electronic-dance sound that is destined to get people in the clubs and on the dance floor.

The track, which was written and produced by the Underdogs and will be available at all digital music stores February 14, is a house-inspired song with a pulsing beat that has Breezy singing, "Turn up the music, 'cause the sun just came up/ Turn up the music if they try to turn us down/ Turn up the music, 'cause I'm trying to hear the speakers blow/ Turn up the music, fill your cup and drink it down," followed by repeated chants of "If you're sexy and you know it, put your hands up in the air."

With a release date for Fortuneto be announced soon, Brown is in the studio putting the finishing touches on his fifth studio album, the follow-up to2011's F.A.M.E.

Back in October, Brown reached out to Team Breezy via Twitter, revealing a single from his upcoming album. "STRIP [from Brown's Boy in Detention mixtape] is one of the singles off of FORTUNE so request at RADIO!" Brown tweeted.

Fans can't expect Brown to be doing much more than tweeting about this album: Earlier this month Brown's manager, Tina Davis, told Billboardmagazine that the singer wouldn't be doing any interviews in 2012. "We're not trying to be rude, selfish or disrespectful to anyone in any way," she told the mag. "If people are going to judge anything, judge him for his talent. He signed up to sing and entertain, not to talk about his personal life."

In her new video, "Forget About Yesterday," power-pop songstress Daniela Brooker focuses on the important things in life: partying! Except the British singer expresses the "you only live once" sentiment much more thoughtfully than I just did.

The video opens with 18-year-old Daniela at what looks to be the end of a long workday (I heard that, sister). She looks out over the city as the street lights twinkle, and just like the rest of us on a Friday night, the girl just wants to dance: "Live your life/Get your boys and girls and take the night/'Cause now's the time to feel the air/And let the music take you, let the music take you, let the music take you..." Cue the club scene: Hands are in the air, sequins are a-shinin', and yesterday is successfully being forgotten.

"Forget About Yesterday" kind of sounds like if Selena Gomez, Christina Aguilera and Shakira got together to DJ a 21st-birthday party -- in other words, it's our jam! And we're more than willing to be one of those boys or girls you call up to go rage, Daniela. Just FYI.

Fake Problems are on a boat! The alt-rock band's "Songs For Teenagers" video hits the water for some chill, sun-dappled cruising, an activity that has visions of summer (and margaritas) dancing in our brains. (No fair!) The video seems like standard, uh, professionally shot vacation footage until the quartet go for a swim, but we won't spoil the surprise. (OK, we'll tell: There are totally mermaids! They did not bring margaritas.)

The scenery's mellow vibe is broken only by the track's angsty lyrics, which makes sense given the track title. "It's a shame all the ways we build ourselves up/Just to let each other down," frontman Chris Farren sings on the chorus a minute after noting, "Wanted to be famous but ended up nameless." It's not so bad, fellas -- imagine how many paparazzi would be swarming the beach while you're trying to enjoy a nice holiday. There'd be mermaid bikini photos everywhere! Your girlfriends would be jealous! Then they'd comfort themselves with your sweet, sweet guitar parts and catchy hooks.

MTV PUSH band Fake Problems may be staying out of the spotlight, but this song should be on your radar.

Album Review By BBC:

Lines between genres have never been more blurred than right now, especially in the mainstream. Experimentation with styles and the melding of musical approaches is to be commended, obviously; but to relate authenticity with consistent, similar output is something very wrong indeed, as not everybody singing the same song is coming from the same place. These charting mutations and variations have as much to do with our culture of instant gratification as they do with music growing out-of-date more quickly – and what better person to stand tall at the lectern than 20-year-old Ed Sheeran, whose unlikely combination of acoustic folk and grime has seen him become one of 2011’s biggest domestic successes.

This is a man who’s been couch-surfing for six years while incessantly gigging, putting out new music, plugging, and building a fanbase (and getting said fans to absolutely worship him). He’s worked with grime artists and toured with Nizlopi, getting shout-outs along the way from Elton John and Jamie Foxx. Given the effort he’s put in, it’s certainly hard to begrudge Sheeran his achievements to date. Raised in Framlingham, Suffolk, he could always see further than the confines of his home town, and recorded his first EP aged 14 – the same year MySpace was bought for $580m by NewsCorp, for some context. Hard grafters were slightly easier to spot in 2005, and users of social media had to try harder to define themselves: The JCB Song’s run for the Christmas number one felt like a huge-scale rebellion back then.

But it’s a shame that Sheeran’s biography is a better summation of where we’re at right now than this debut album, on which his precocious self-referencing can become infuriating. You Need Me, I Don’t Need You is unbearable, as he sings, "I’ve done around about a thousand shows / But I haven’t got a house plus I live on a couch / So you believe the lyrics when I’m singing them out". The escapist Drunk is sweet, but his auto-biographical approach to writing has a very limited shelf-life because, essentially, the story just isn’t interesting enough to stretch across 12 tracks. There are standout cuts, though: Grade 8 is a flying track made for radio which opens with a bassline seeped in the nostalgia of Wifey by RnB boyband Next. The City’s chorus also soars; again, the song draws on 90s RnB with Sheeran’s driving, natural delivery and some emphatic drum fills comprising winning constituents.

+ will give Sheeran’s rabid fanbase a lot to love, but it’ll also make him an easy target for critics hungry for new directions in pop, as it fails to really gel the man’s loves of folk and rap. But even though originality isn’t quite what it could be throughout this set, the way he observes and picks situations apart is quite something – something to be developed for album two, certainly. If he ditches his bottom-of-a-Tube-escalator ballads (see Kiss Me) and stops trying to show off, Sheeran could well become a thrilling proposition over an entire long-player, rather than just in all-too-brief moments of magic.

Well, the past 10 minutes have certainly been exciting for Ed Sheeran fans. Having recently revealed that he was in America working with an exciting artist, Ed took to his Twitter a few moments ago to reveal that that artist is Yelawolf, and to ask fans to get the title of their forthcoming collaborative EP trending, so that he could release the first track. As is the power of Ed, a worldwide trend was achieved within five minutes.

And the first track from The Slumdon Bridge was unleashed upon many an eager ear. Stalley’s main strength isn’t how he raps but what he raps about. On the Ski Beatz-produced number “Gentlemen’s Quarterly,” Stalley uses the “Tastemaker for the tastemakers…” chorus to capture his boldness while simultaneously referencing himself as “a revolutionary that loves the dough, America’s nightmare in the wicker chair.” He persistently reminds us that, much like Nas many years before him, the Midwest MC plays the middle by alternating between a focus on individual and community, dreaming big for self while idealizing the thoughts of many who grew up with and surround him. Stalley carries the torch lit by the aforementioned God MC’s “Project Windows” and runs with it through the same potholed streets full of “bookworms and pimps with cooked perms” that have paid off well by giving him rhyme fodder for days and a lifetime of inspiration.

While Stalley bases his lyrics on the detail and insights regarding a life lived close enough to the action without succumbing to the perils of it, the details and simple introspection (“Been a rich man and been a broke, that’s why I still pistol tote and ride Chevy’s with a hundred spokes”) are what make what he does stand out above the crowd. And it’s all delivered in the calmest of voices, proving to be the anti-thesis of Shakespeare’s “sound and fury.” Again, the passion comes not from the how, but from the what. Listen closely and it can felt.

Also included below is the newly released “City Of 30,000 Wolves,” featuring a ghoulish, synthetic soundbed provided by DJ Toomp and with Khaled’s commenterary lightly sprinkled across the track. The song is more of social commentary, this time dedicated to Stalley’s hometown of Massillon, Ohio and said to be part of Songs By Me, Stalley, a series of warm-up tracks for the upcoming Savage Journey To The American Dream project. And if “Wolves…, “Gentlemen’s…” and previous works are any indications, we can expect continued greatness and growth on Savage…

In the first video for their soon-to-drop sophomore record, Sleigh Bells seem blissfully stuck in some dreamy flashback of 1985. One scene from "Comeback Kid" shows singer Alexis Krauss strutting around a sun-washed beach in shredded acid-washed jeans and giant heart-shaped earrings while another has the noise-pop superstar looking like a bubblegum teen queen gone bad as she dances up a storm in a studded leather jacket, DayGlo daisy dukes, fishnets and Keds. (And give us a minute to salivate over those nails... Okay, we're back.) We're not sure what's going on in that segment that's got Alexis jumping on a bed while holding a rifle and sporting a scary-huge grin, but her magenta bathrobe is totally outrageous.

The first proper single off of Reign of Terror (due out February 14), "Comeback Kid" is sweet as strawberry Pop Rocks and almost just as explosive. All that crunchy noise comes courtesy of guitarist Derek Miller, whose Nirvana tee seems awesomely out of place in the midst of the '80s nostalgia overload. Later in the video, Derek slips on a varsity jacket and the duo take a spin through the grocery store, dropping lots of Hostess goodies and Chips Ahoy! cookies in their cart. By the time he punches the air in a bad-ass nod to Bender fromThe Breakfast Club, we're wishing Sleigh Bells' dream of the '80s would never come to an end.

Punk's not dead; it just got super-obsessed with Instagram. Ontario quintet Silverstein's hard-hitting new single "Brookfield" comes along with footage vignetted and faded like your favorite filters, though the band's cool underwater shots look like actual Super 8 film. When he's not taking a dip, singer Shane Told is marching intently through the streets of his hometown as electric guitars blast, singing about memories that seem anything but sepia-toned: "I'm sick of telling secrets/To people who don't care enough to know/Why I'm so scared," he sings.

But we don't know, either -- at a mere 90 seconds, the track's over before Told can tell us, closing with the lines "So bury me on Brookfield/And then I won't be scared." Luckily, the song itself won't give you the heebie-jeebies. It piles on more hooks than "Peter Pan," with a perfect punk balance of catchy melodies and rocking the eff out. The quickie jam is from Silverstein's Short Songs album, a 22-track collection of miniature originals and covers of Green Day, NOFX and more of Silverstein's heroes.

Short Songs, Silverstein's sixth album, is due Feb. 7, so keep an eye out. Or blink and you'll miss it.

Starting another 14 day week with a song that still gives me chills. (Reminds me: Really, really, need to catch up on Castle). That's where I first heard it and it has stuck with me.

It's monday. Having one day off was nice. Originally was suppose to work yesterday, but at the last minute on Friday my bosses asked me to work a 7th [actually 15th, in my case] in a row to pick up and transcribe some interview that came in early Saturday morning. By the end, felt like my fingers had been broken and my head...virtually non-existent. Type a feeling I always imagined having on my birthday weekend. (ha!)

Didn't even have enough energy to see my friends.

Gratefully, did spend Sunday breakfast with the family at IHop. What ruined the moment was My boss calling me. Shows you what my life has become. (ugh) Nevertheless, can't complain about the paychecks. Have to remember, not doing this for myself. To argue that fact, this type of responsibly shouldn't be placed on any living soul.

One day, I'll find peace of mind, body, soul, business, and pleasure. Or else, pray for rapture.

With the help of a Kickstarter fund that surpassed his original goal by miles, Kishi Bashi — strings guru and recent producer/touring member for the psychedelic circus that is Of Montreal — will release his debut full-length, 151a, on April 10 via Joyful Noise. Of Montreal stand out thanks to their avant garde-leaning music, penchant for costume changes, and the fact that there’s seemingly 30 people in the group. However, there’s one aspect of the band that isn’t always obvious: the individual band members. If there’s any of the outfit’s members that deserve some time in the spotlight, it’s Kishi Bashi. In addition to being the band’s strings sensei and touring member, Bashi also single-handedly produced the band’s upcoming 11th LP, Paralytic Stalks. Still, when the record drops on February 7th, he’ll continue to be just another face in the multi-colored crowd. His time to shine, though, comes when he releases his debut solo album, 151a, on April 10th via Joyful Noise.

For an introduction into Bashi’s musical universe, turn no further than the track “Bright Whites”. As he is still an of Montreal member, the music is, for all intents and purposes, off-kilter, particularly the opening chants and swirl of guitar and drums (which sound vaguely familiar to band recordings). The middle section, though, takes a more even-keeled approach to pop, balancing the looped whistles with peaceful, yet evocative vocals. Bashi then rides the song to a seemingly natural conclusion: a jumble of sounds and voices, as if a happy clown were walking a rainbow bridge into the sunset. Take a listen to the track now.

Etta James, who has died aged 73 after suffering from leukaemia, was among the most critically acclaimed and influential female singers of the past 50 years, even if she never achieved huge popular success. From her first R&B hit, in 1954, the risqué Roll With Me Henry – cut when she was only 15 – through a series of classic 1960s soul sides (the lush ballad At Last, the raucous house rocker Tell Mama and the emotional agony of I'd Rather Go Blind), then a series of critically acclaimed 1970s and 1980s albums that won her a broad rock audience, to more recent albums of jazz vocals, James proved capable of developing and changing as an artist.

Her approach to both singing and life was throughout one of wild, often desperate engagement that included violence, drug addiction, armed robbery and extremely capricious behaviour. James sang with unmatched emotional hunger and a pain that can chill the listener. The ferocity of her voice documents a neglected child, a woman constantly entering into bad relationships and an artist raging against an industry and a society that routinely discriminated against her.

James's continuing appeal to new generations was proved when the R&B superstar Beyoncé played James in the 2008 film Cadillac Records. The British pop singer Adele said that it was buying an Etta James CD aged 13 that made her want to sing.

She was born Jamesetta Hawkins to 14-year-old Dorothy Hawkins and an unknown white father – James maintained he was the pool shark Rudolf "Minnesota Fats" Wanderone, she was raised at first in Los Angeles by adoptive parents. From the age of five, she sang gospel in the local church, and later acknowledged the influence of the choirmaster, Professor James Earl Hines.

When Jamesetta's adoptive mother died, Dorothy reappeared and took her 12-year-old daughter to San Francisco. Dorothy was a hustler and showed no inclination to change her lifestyle. "She was never there when I got off from school," James recalled, "so I could pretty much do what I wanted to do ... drinking, smoking weed." Violence and substance abuse were now constants in James's life and she would maintain a difficult, combative relationship with her mother across many decades.

James formed a vocal trio, the Creolettes, with two teenage friends. They auditioned for the maverick rhythm and blues band leader Johnny Otis. He was so impressed with James's voice and composition, Roll With Me Henry, that he offered to take her to Los Angeles the following day to record. She agreed, lied to him that she was 18 and, when he demanded her mother's signed consent, went home and forged it – Dorothy was then in prison.

Roll With Me Henry was retitled The Wallflower – Modern Records decided the original title was too explicit – and Otis renamed his protege Etta James. The song reached No 1 on the R&B charts in 1955 (while Georgia Gibbs's bland cover went to No 1 in the pop charts). The follow-up, Good Rockin' Daddy, reached No 12 in the R&B charts in November 1955.

On tours with Otis, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Ike and Tina Turner and Little Richard, as a teenager James encountered and quickly embraced much debauchery. Although there were no more 50s hits, she was a popular attraction in black America's working-class "chitlin' circuit" clubs.

In 1959 James signed with the Chicago blues label Chess, which began marketing her as the "Queen of Soul". She notched up such hits as All I Could Do Was Cry, If I Can't Have You and At Last. Here her powerhouse contralto voice was matched with the sumptuous bluesy string arrangements of Riley Hampton, and James truly came into her own as a singer. Her 1963 album Etta James Rocks the House was recorded live at the New Era club in Nashville and documents a formidable performer.

In 1967 Leonard Chess sent James to Alabama to record at Fame studios with producer Rick Hall. The resulting sessions produced the roaring Tell Mama which took her back to the R&B top 10. Tell Mama's B-side was I'd Rather Go Blind, a brooding, agonised ballad of loss and jealousy which now stands as James' most celebrated recording and one of the classic sides of soul music. James wrote or co-wrote several of her greatest songs.

That year, James's influence was everywhere, with a variety of black female singers (including Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Candi Staton) employing her defiant, abrasive vocal style. Janis Joplin modelled her singing closely on James and covered Tell Mama. James was a star, yet one seemingly set on self-destruction: addicted to heroin and bad men, she lived a criminal lifestyle and was jailed several times. After leaving jail in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1969, she met and married Artis Mills. When, in 1971, the couple were arrested in San Antonio, Texas, on narcotics charges, Mills took the fall. On his release in 1981, the couple reunited.

James never again enjoyed a major US hit, although she continued to record strong material. Perhaps her voice, so raw and emotionally expressive, was too fierce for the general public. Indeed, hurt, anger and self-destructive behaviour boiled beneath the surface of her vocals. Once asked to describe her style, she responded that singing allowed her to vent "all this bitch shit inside of me".

James became a natural replacement for Joplin after the latter's death in 1970. Teamed with Joplin's collaborator Gabriel Meckler in 1973, James began to record rock songs: mauling the Eagles, slugging Randy Newman.

The 1974 album Come a Little Closer, recorded while she was in rehab at a psychiatric hospital, features James at her best. A shift to Warner Brothers in 1978 did not return her to a wide audience and, although she often worked with major producers, James remained beloved more by critics and blues-soul aficionados than a mass audience.

When paired with the right producer and material, James delivered superb albums: Seven Year Itch (1989), Matriarch of the Blues (2000) and even her swansong The Dreamer (2011) find her interpreting songs with grace and venom. An elite fanclub ensured James sang at the LA Olympics' opening ceremony in 1984, appeared in Taylor Hackford's celebrated Chuck Berry feature Hail! Hail! Rock'n'Roll (1987), opened stadium dates for the Rolling Stones and was inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. She scored a surprising (and sole) UK top 10 hit in 1996 when her threatening reading of I Just Want to Make Love to You became the soundtrack to a Diet Coke advertisement. In 1995 James recorded Mystery Lady, the first in a series of jazz vocal albums where she channelled the influence of Billie Holiday. This brought her to yet another audience.

James won six Grammy awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Having finally conquered her drug addiction in 1988 she began to struggle with her weight – in 2002, weighing more than 400lb, she had gastric bypass surgery and lost 200lb, which allowed her to return to active singing and performing. The 2008 film Cadillac Records, a heavily fictionalised biopic of Chess Records, attracted wide attention due to Beyoncé playing James. The young superstar made a decent job of portraying James as a foul-mouthed, two-fisted singer, yet lacked the raging bull quality that made James so unforgettable.

Beyoncé was invited to sing At Last at Barack Obama's presidential inauguration. James publicly criticised her, then later offered an apology, suggesting she was upset not to have been invited to sing herself. She added that she would have sung the song better. Rage to Survive, James's autobiography, was published in 1995 and proved as blistering as her singing.

She is survived by her husband and her sons Donto and Sametto.
